Gauteng’s young farmers under the age of 40 are invited to a networking braai tonight (Friday, 3 September) at Obaro Tijgervallei in Pretoria. The event is hosted by Agri Gauteng and Sanlam.

Agri Gauteng will introduce the chairperson and vice chairperson of the Young Farmers Gauteng Committee, which was conceived of by Agri Gauteng and Nedbank, to promote and assist young farmers in the province.

Herman Krause, short-term insurance specialist at Sanlam, tells Food For Mzansi that the braai will also be a networking opportunity for farmers in the province.

While the event was the brain child of Agri Gauteng and Nedbank, Sanlam is now the co-host.

“We already started inviting the young farmers who are part of Agri Gauteng for the little meet-and-greet, where we will be unveiling the new website that we have started for the Young Farmers Gauteng Committee,” he says.

The objectives of the committee

Krause indicates that the objective of the committee is to promote and support young farmers in Gauteng. “If you’ve got a farm and you’re battling as a young farmer, let’s say with a water crisis, you can let us know and we can take it up with Agri Gauteng and try and sort it out.

“We’re also trying to open up avenues for young farmers, basically to look after [them]. If you got any problems on your land, you can call us… We will assist young farmers with anything to grow their business,” he says.

Krause says that Sanlam is already a major sponsor of Agri Gauteng, but stemming from the Limpopo and Gauteng Young Farmer of the Year competitions, he and the CEO of Agri Gauteng, Thinus van Zijl, decided to start the Young Farmers Gauteng Committee.

The braai will start at 16:30 at Obaro Tijgervalley on the corner of Graham and Silverlakes Rd, Hazeldean.

To RSVP, farmers can send email to ayanda@agrigauteng.com or send a message via WhatsApp to 083 498 4122.
