Choosing between open-pollinated varieties (OPV) and hybrids to maximise maize crop yields requires careful consideration. From seed selection to moisture management, these factors are essential for sustainable and productive farming.
In the ever-evolving world of agriculture, farmers are constantly seeking ways to improve yields, enhance disease resistance, and adapt to changing climate conditions. Agronomist Cannon Mukuma and conservationist Vitalis Wafula from Bayer’s crop science division highlight key considerations that farmers must prioritise to achieve optimal results.
What are open-pollinated variety (OPV) seeds?
Unlike hybrids, OPV seeds are naturally pollinated by wind, insects, or other natural methods. “Farmers will save seeds from the best crops in the field so that they can grow it and replant the following season,” Mukuma says.
The advantages of OPV seeds include:
- Seed saving: Farmers can store and reuse seeds, reducing costs.
- Genetic diversity: OPVs often adapt better to changing environmental conditions over multiple seasons.
- Lower input costs: OPVs do not require strict isolation distances or controlled breeding conditions, making them more accessible to small-scale farmers.
However, OPV seeds tend to have lower and more variable yields compared to hybrids. Mukuma notes they are also more susceptible to diseases, pests, and inconsistent growth patterns.

The benefits of hybrid seeds
Specifically-bred hybrid seeds can be an effective solution to improve yield, disease resistance and staying ahead of climate change. But what makes hybrid seeds beneficial, and why would farmers consider them over open-pollinated varieties?
Higher yields
“When comparing hybrid seeds to OPVs, studies show that hybrid seeds consistently deliver higher yields,” says Mukuma. “This is because hybrid seeds are bred specifically to maximise productivity.”
While OPVs typically yield between 2 to 6 metric tonnes per hectare, hybrid seeds can produce between 6 to 14 metric tonnes per hectare. With improved farm management, some farmers can even achieve up to 10 metric tonnes per hectare, bringing them closer to national production targets.
Meeting national maize production targets is vital for food security, ensuring a stable supply and price stability. According to the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, South Africa’s 2024-25 maize preliminary plantings are targeted at 2.64 million hectares.
Disease and pest resistance
One major advantage of hybrid seeds is their built-in resistance to common diseases and pests. “Some hybrids are strong against maize streak virus (MSV), while others show resistance to cob rot,” explains Mukuma. “When we cross these two, the result is a hybrid that offers protection against both threats, making it a better option for farmers.”
Adaptability to different climates
Climate change is a growing concern for farmers worldwide, and hybrid seeds are designed to withstand extreme conditions. “For example, in drier areas, early-maturing hybrids are recommended, while regions with longer growing seasons benefit from late-maturing hybrids.”

Uniform growth and harvesting
Farmers who plant hybrid seeds often notice that their crops grow more uniformly, making management and harvesting easier. “Hybrid seeds ensure that plants mature at the same time, simplifying the process.”
Hybrid seeds and sustainable agriculture
As smallholder farmers increasingly adopt hybrid seed varieties, integrating them with sustainable agricultural practices remains a challenge. Wafula stresses the importance of access to reliable agronomic information and quality inputs to improve productivity.
“One of the biggest challenges that smallholder farmers have is access to information on how to optimise their productivity, how to employ good agronomic practices, and how to use their inputs effectively,” Wafula explains.
For farmers’ sustainable practices while using hybrid seeds, three key areas are crucial:
- Land preparation: Emphasising minimum tillage to reduce soil disturbance and retain moisture.
- Nutrient application and seeding: Ensure correct application of fertilisers and manure.
- Weed and pest control: Using herbicides and biopesticides for effective crop protection.
“Minimum tillage is non-negotiable. Many farmers disturb the soil unnecessarily, which affects soil structure and moisture retention. A good farmer should only prepare the land where seeds will be planted,” Wafula says.
Practical steps for farmers to achieve high yields
Following the right steps in crop production is essential for maximising yields and ensuring farm sustainability. Understanding the significance of these steps outlined by Mukuma can help guide farmers in making informed decisions that lead to healthier crops and better market outcomes.
Selecting the right seed
The foundation of successful farming begins with choosing the right seed. Mukuma emphasises, “Farmers need to be certain that they select the seed that is adaptable to their environment.” This means considering climate conditions, soil type, and resistance to pests and diseases.
Implementing proper agricultural practices
Once the appropriate seed is chosen, adopting sound agricultural practices is crucial. Proper land preparation ensures a conducive environment for germination and growth, while soil conservation methods enhance long-term sustainability.
“They need to have in mind how they intend to conserve the soil,” Mukuma advises.
Effective nutrient management is also vital. Applying the correct quantity of nutrients at the right time leads to healthier crop development. “If we are not giving it the necessary feed, it will take too long,” he explains. Providing sufficient nutrients within six weeks significantly improves market value.
Effective crop and population management
Efficient crop management plays a pivotal role in achieving high yields. Maintaining an optimal plant population directly impacts yields. Proper spacing, density, and overall crop health contribute to maximising kernel production and increasing productivity.
Moisture management
Water availability is a critical factor influencing agricultural success. For small-scale farmers, controlling moisture levels is often a challenge.
“We need to have optimum moisture conditions for farmers to attain those good yields,” Mukuma explains. The impact of rainfall patterns on yield is evident.
