This month, Food For Mzansi’s Joën Cornelissen got behind the wheel of the Mahindra Pik Up S11 4×2 DC/AT. And much to his surprise, it turned out to be a beast of a vehicle leading to many jealous stares along the way
Driving a Mahindra Pik Up S11 4×2 DC/AT bakkie comes very close to flying, even on the dirt road leading to Ceres in the Western Cape. This is where Food For Mzansi recently hosted an AgriCareers roadshow, and much to the surprise of attendees, we arrived in this beast of the long road.
While the Indian workhorse is slightly weird-looking on the Mzansi roads, it does guarantee a few jealous stares from admirers coming from all directions. Pesky potholes are a breeze, and at times, it feels like the vehicle was gliding through the Mitchell’s Pass like a hot knife through butter.
Make no mistake, the Mahindra S11 double cab is luxurious enough for city dwellers, but also reliable and strong enough for farm living. It’s the type of vehicle that you can drive to a business meeting o impress clients, and also use for a game or beach drive with loved ones. It’s awkwardly stylish, whether you are in the city or on the countryside.
No wonder Mahindra is on the rise according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa. In 2019, it was the fastest growing car brand in the country, and it’s still a popular choice.
It’s fully automatic and available in both a 4×4 and 4×2 guise. I drove the two-wheel drive and was impressed with its lighter weight and fuel economy. It is also known for its superior towing capacity.
All the features you deserve
What makes cruising around in the Mahindra S11 even more special, is the incredible digital interface with great touch-sensitivity. The infotainment system incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Plus, it features a USB and Bluetooth phone interface. The screen also displays the high-resolution images of the in-built reverse camera.
If you’re worried about hot summer days on the farm, you’ll be pleased to know that airconditioning is standard. Unlike many other vehicles, this beast allows you to monitor the exact fuel usage and fuel levels to prevent you from ending up in awkward little situations on the road.
The Mahindra S11 is highly recommended if you’re looking for a vehicle that feels comfortable with enough power to tow a building. Well, you know what I mean… This bakkie might have Indian origins, but it’s perfect for Mzansi terrain and changing climates.
