Doing good is built into Khula! App’s business model. As one of Mzansi’s new tech players, their mission is to close the gap between farmers, suppliers, and markets. In this edition we catch up with Karidas Tshintsholo, the co-founder and CEO of Khula! App, who is leveraging technology for Mzansi farmers to thrive.
In the episode, Tshintsholo shares recent company developments with us and why he believes the agri sector has a lot of potential, despite several difficulties that need to be solved.
“Problems present the opportunity, you know, and I think that’s why we’ve kind of set up Khula. But then agriculture is very unique to the industry – it’s very hard to have a one-dimensional approach,” he says.
Tshintsholo also speaks on the importance of education around markets, access to these markets, and why most farmers fail in this regard.
Exciting times ahead for agritech
The app has come along way since being founded in 2016. Tinshintsholo credits Absa with helping to put Khula! on the map, as the company has worked closely with them to help spread their wings. The Land Bank, other investors and buyers have also invested a great deal in Khula!.
Detailing their next moves, Tinshintsholo says, “The big thing for us now; we’re working towards a series A investment round, which is going to happen probably at the end of next year. That’s the big, big milestone that the whole team is kind of pushing towards at the moment; we want to take the solution outside of South Africa.”
He also shares bringing one of the biggest input suppliers on board the Khula! App, which have helped their distribution network in a big way.
“It’s also helped a lot from a technical service perspective – we have 190 technical experts that are available on our app… and about 150 suppliers.”
