It’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun. We are already in the fourth and final week of our VKB Food For Mzansi Agricultural Career Roadshow.

Settlers Agricultural High school in Settlers, Limpopo, was abuzz yesterday when close to 700 learners were given a taste of the endless career opportunities agriculture has to offer.

At each session of the Agricultural Career Roadshow we invite all our exhibitors to join a short question and answer session to give the learners an opportunity to engage with the experts and to better understand their respective fields.

The two sessions at Settlers were attended by learners from five different schools in the area. Moeng Marvelous Siyabonga, a gr. 10 learner from Alfred B Makapane High, says that before listening to the panel and interacting personally with them after the session, she did not realise that her agricultural school subjects can lead to great careers that is not just limited to farming.

Marianne van der Laarse, owner and managing director of Agrijob (an agriculture career platform), formed part of the exhibitor panel. She says their experience at the agricultural

career day was quite overwhelming. “To engage with students and to see the passion and interest they have is amazing. They are so keen to know more about what career they can follow within agriculture.”

She adds that although some learners realise that they don’t have the mathematics and science subjects they require to enter a course to complete a BSc degree in agriculture at tertiary institutions, they don’t give up. Van der Laarse answered many questions from the various school learners about the other options within the agricultural sector.

Choosing a career path may be daunting to some learners, but they were open to exploring the options within agriculture.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 12 global awards in the first three years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
