Conservation agriculture is gaining momentum in South Africa as a vital approach to sustainable crop and livestock farming, particularly in the face of increasing climate challenges.
With droughts becoming more frequent and severe, adopting conservation agriculture is increasingly essential for building resilience and ensuring long-term agricultural productivity.
This approach is not only beneficial for crop farmers but also holds significant advantages for livestock farmers, says rangeland scientist and PhD candidate Patrick Rakau. Integrating conservation agriculture can improve grazing efficiency, enhance soil fertility, and create a more sustainable production system.
Rakau shares valuable insights into how livestock farmers can successfully adopt these practices to secure a more resilient and productive farming future.
Understanding conservation agriculture
According to Rakau, conservation agriculture is a sustainable system that integrates livestock into crop production to improve soil health. “When animals graze the plants or the crops, they stimulate regrowth, whereby the plants push back sugars to the soil through the roots. In that process, carbon is built up in the soil, which is an essential element for improving soil health.”
This practice also aids year-round feed availability, particularly in off-season periods such as winter and early spring when quality feed is scarce. Rakau emphasises that integrating livestock into conservation agriculture enhances both crop and animal productivity, ultimately creating a more resilient farming system.
Key principles of conservation agriculture
Rakau says the three foundational principles of conservation agriculture applying equally to livestock farming, are:
- Minimum tillage – “Minimal disturbance of the soil, whether by mechanisation or by hand.”
- Cover cropping – “We advise farmers to keep their soil covered throughout the year.”
- Crop rotation – “Ensure that diverse crops are planted to enhance soil fertility and reduce pests and diseases.”
By adopting these principles, livestock farmers can create a self-sustaining system where soil health is maintained, erosion is minimised, and feed quality is improved.
Furthermore, Rakau warns against relying on machinery for pasture management. “Machinery causes soil compaction, which hinders water infiltration and aeration. The presence of animals is a key element in conservation agriculture.”

Practical steps for livestock farmers
- Implement rotational grazing
One of the best ways to integrate conservation agriculture into livestock farming is through rotational grazing. This practice involves dividing pastureland into smaller sections and allowing livestock to graze in one section at a time while others recover.
Rotational grazing helps preserve moisture, control invasive species, and prevent the degradation of rangelands. “Once you overgraze, you create room for invasive species that can take over your grazing land,” says Rakau.

- Use cover crops
Cover crops, such as legumes and grasses, play a crucial role in maintaining soil structure and fertility. These crops can be used as livestock feed while also providing soil cover to prevent erosion and retain moisture.
“Cover crops serve a dual purpose – they improve soil health and provide additional fodder for livestock, making them an excellent investment for farmers,” says Rakau.
- Integrate livestock with cropping systems
Integrating livestock with crop production can create a more sustainable farming system. Livestock manure enriches the soil with organic matter, reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers.
Rakau advises, “Instead of treating livestock and crops as separate enterprises, farmers should consider an integrated approach where livestock contribute to soil fertility while benefiting from diverse grazing options.”
- Reduce soil disturbance
Minimising soil disturbance is a key conservation agriculture principle. Farmers can achieve this by adopting no-till or minimum-till practices, which help preserve soil structure and prevent erosion.
“Healthy soil leads to better pasture growth, and reducing tillage ensures that the land remains productive for years to come,” notes Rakau.

- Improved soil health: Conservation agriculture reduces soil erosion and enhances organic matter, leading to healthier pastures and improved nutrient retention.
- Better forage production: Rotational grazing and cover crops contribute to higher-quality feed for livestock.

- Cost savings: Reducing soil disturbance minimises fuel and labour costs associated with traditional tillage practices.
“Farmers who use conservation agriculture notice better forage quality and improved grazing conditions, which ultimately result in healthier livestock,” says Rakau.
He encourages farmers to start small. “Even simple changes, such as rotating grazing areas or planting cover crops, can make a significant impact over time. Farmers should gradually adopt conservation agriculture practices to see sustainable results.”
