Crop protection is a critical component of modern agriculture, especially for farmers looking to maximise yields while maintaining environmental sustainability. The growing challenges posed by pests, diseases, and changing climatic conditions necessitate effective crop protection strategies to safeguard food production.
Horticulturist Tapiwa Masimba provides insights into understanding and implementing crop protection methods, which can be the difference between thriving and struggling in an increasingly unpredictable agricultural landscape.
One of the most critical aspects of farming is protecting crops from pests. There are various methods available to farmers, each with its advantages and disadvantages.
Physical pest control methods
Physical methods involve directly preventing or removing pests from crops. While they avoid the use of chemicals, they can be labour-intensive and less efficient in large-scale operations.
“If you look at the physical control methods, like you’re weeding physically and chemically, one will opt to go chemically because chemically, you just put in a spray. Whereas if you go physical, now you have to weed manually or mechanically,” says Masimba.
Physical methods, such as traps and enclosures (with insect nets and greenhouses), are more common in smaller, enclosed farming operations. These methods allow for better control of pests in protected environments but are impractical for larger farms.
“I’ve seen traps where you lure the pests by colour or pheromones. They use chemicals a little – you put your pheromones to lure the insects in there.”

Biological pest control methods
Biological methods involve the use of natural predators or repellents to control pests. Though environmentally friendly, these methods are often less aggressive, aiming to reduce pest pressure rather than eliminate pests.
“You have your biological sprays as well, they are mostly repellents. Repellents are mostly plant extracts which deter insects from attacking crops by their scent. They just try to control and reduce and keep the pest pressure at bay,” Masimba explains.
Chemical pest control methods
Chemical pest control is often a last resort due to its potential harm to both the environment and human health. However, it is sometimes necessary, especially when other methods fail.
“After physical, when do you implement biological? When do you implement chemicals? So, it’s a combination. It has to be a strategy.”
Importance of integrated pest management (IPM)
Given the limitations of each method, many farmers adopt integrated pest management (IPM). This approach combines physical, biological, and chemical methods based on the specific needs and conditions of the farm.
Masimba cautions that depending solely on chemical methods to control pests is detrimental. IPM allows farmers to optimise their pest control strategies, reduce dependency on harmful chemicals, and promote long-term sustainability.
“[Farmers] realised the chemical only cannot work. It will reach a time when you start to get negative results because of overusing chemicals.”
Coping with weather extremes
Beyond pests, farmers must also protect their crops from environmental factors such as heat, frost, and hail. Various methods are available, depending on the type of farming and region.
Shade netting and greenhouse structures
For smaller farms, shade netting and greenhouses offer effective protection from excessive sunlight, frost, and hail.
“You try to shade off 20% of the light and allow 80%. It also helps in the wintertime where you find that under the shade net, in most cases, it doesn’t frost.”
These structures, however, may not be practical for larger-scale grain farmers.
“For grain farmers, it becomes impractical to protect their crop against things like hailstorms with shade netting.”

Frost protection
Frost damage is a significant concern, particularly in winter. Farmers can use temporary frost covers to protect vulnerable crops.
“There are covers, [that] you put on top of the crops in winter to prevent frost damage.”
However, more extreme events, such as black frost, pose a greater challenge, he noted.
Harnessing technology in crop protection
As farming becomes more advanced, new technologies are emerging to supplement traditional pest control and environmental protection methods. Drones are increasingly being used for spraying pesticides, though farmers must be cautious to follow regulations and chemical dosages.
“There is technology, yes, but people must be very, very careful how they use it. Aligning it to the regulations as well is important.”
Robots are also being developed to assist with tasks like weeding.
“I saw a robot at one point, doing weeding. You programme it, you put your maps into it, you feed it with information about your farm, and then you can simply tell it to go and weed.”
Precision farming technologies, Masimba added, such as GPS and grid sampling, help farmers optimise their use of resources, reducing waste and improving efficiency.
