In the world of pig farming, navigating the path to profitability requires more than just a love for your pigs. It demands a keen understanding of market trends, adherence to regulatory standards, and a strategic approach to sales.
Thandi Chiappero, programme manager at the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (Sappo), shares invaluable advice for aspiring pig farmers in this episode.
Chiappero emphasises the importance of adhering to regulatory standards right from the outset. “You register a brand mark and a tattoo with the department of agriculture. So that’s your sort of starting point as a farmer.
“Compliance with agricultural product standards, including the Stock Theft Act, is crucial, with specific requirements such as ear tattoos for pigs over 100 kg,” she says.
Biosecurity a top priority
Chiappero delves into the nuances of welfare regulations and compartment standards, highlighting their significance in ensuring biosecurity on farms, especially for those eyeing export markets.
She emphasises that while standards like Pork 360 provide a framework for quality assurance, they remain voluntary, underscoring the importance of differentiation in niche markets.
Regarding sales strategies, Chiappero cautions against the pitfalls of auctioning pigs, citing biosecurity concerns and the potential for disease spread. Instead, she advocates for direct sales, urging farmers to prioritise transparency and biosecurity measures.
“It’s very ill advised to buy pigs if you don’t know where they’re coming from,” she says.
When questioned about marketing practices, Chiappero emphasises understanding the target market’s preferences. She stresses the need to tailor products to consumer demands, dispelling myths surrounding pork consumption and advocating for factual promotion.
In this episode, she also discusses:
