One thing about South Africans, they will go out of their way to help those less fortunate themselves. This time, it’s to help end hunger.
This week, 28 cycling enthusiasts will brave approximately 1 400km, cycling through four provinces in aid of a hunger-free South Africa.
The tour known as the Extreme Ride 4 Hunger Cycle Tour, is hosted by the meals on wheels community services. This is the seventh edition of the tour and is the biggest fundraising event hosted by the organisation.
According to Meals on Wheels Community Services (Mowcs), Northern Cape area director, and pastor Bevan Jenneke, the goals of the event are to raise funds and to create awareness of the work done by the organisation in trying to alleviate hunger and poverty in South Africa.

On your marks…cycle!
The tour kicks off in Meyerton, Johannesburg on Tuesday, 28 February from 5am until Friday, 10 March, when it will end in Cape Town at about 12pm.
There will be various stops along the way.
The cyclists will be assisted by a team of support staff responsible for directing cyclists on the road with lead cars, providing water to cyclists along the way, and providing medical care if the need arises.
There will be pit stops at various destination points along the way and cyclists will get to conduct community outreach programmes, providing 40 care packages to the elderly, 300 food parcels, and 180 stationary packs to the twelve selected beneficiaries.
These included the meals on wheels service centres, special needs schools, and frail care centres.
Reaching millions
“The Extreme Ride 4 Hunger 2022 Cycle Tour outreach programs reached approximately 1500 people and our awareness campaign reached more than 2 million people,” Jenneke said.
Mowcs is a registered non-profit organisation established in East London in 1964. There are over seven hundred service points, a fleet of over 200 vehicles, and 1400 volunteers serving more than 31 million meals annually to the needy.
