A vibrant celebration of hope and transformation unfolded in Limpopo as AgriSETA and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) honoured a group of graduates from the Mopani and Sekhukhune districts.
These individuals have successfully completed AgriSETA-funded skills programmes, now emerging as skilled agents of change ready to invigorate the provincial agricultural landscape and drive sustainable development in their communities.
The agricultural sector remains a cornerstone of rural communities, providing income and employment for countless families. By imparting skills in crop production, livestock management, agribusiness, and sustainable farming practices, the programme aims to empower graduates to become agents of change within their communities.
Partnerships for success
The collaboration between Salga and AgriSETA reflects a strong commitment to empowering youth and women through targeted training and skills development initiatives. Salga commended AgriSETA for its dedication to fostering a collaborative approach that brings tangible benefits to local communities.
AgriSETA chief executive Dr Innocent Sirovha noted the importance of inclusive partnerships, stating, “Collaboration with stakeholders such as traditional leaders and churches is essential. Together, we can build a sustainable agricultural future, leveraging local wisdom and resources to empower our communities effectively.”

While celebrating the achievements of the graduates, stakeholders acknowledged the various challenges confronting the agricultural sector. Issues such as climate change, drought, and limited market access pose significant hurdles that demand innovative and sustainable solutions.
Fortunately, the graduates are now equipped to tackle these challenges head-on and contribute to the development of resilient farming systems.
Ledile Sebati, Limpopo provincial director of operations, stated, “We are incredibly proud of our graduates and their achievements. Their hard work and dedication fill us with hope for the future of agriculture in Limpopo, and we are excited to support them as they embark on their journeys to make a difference in their communities.”
The Mopani and Sekhukhune districts have pledged to support these graduates as they embark on their careers. Executive mayor of Mopani, Pule Shayi, stressed government’s commitment to providing support for graduates and entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.
“This includes assistance with business formalization, market access, mentorship programs, and access to government support initiatives,” he stated.
Shayi reassured attendees that his office would engage with the department of agriculture to ensure allocated funds effectively support various agricultural enterprises led by young people.
The Mopani graduation ceremony, held on 18 October 2024 at Karibu Resort outside Tzaneen, was presided over by Shayi alongside the mayor of Greater Tzaneen, Gerson Molapisane.
The Sekhukhune graduation took place on 22 October 2024 at the Sekhukhune District Council Chambers, led by MMC for youth, women and vulnerable groups, Kanana Leokana. Rebecca Letsoane, the deputy chairperson, represented Salga’s provincial executive committee at both events.
