Dr Sakhi Nkosi, a technical veterinarian at Afrivet, and Rugano Magadu, a senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria’s faculty of veterinary science, delve into practical management practices specifically designed to minimise their impact during breeding and safeguard the health of your breeding stock.
Prevention strategies to protect livestock
The good news is that foot rot is largely preventable through effective management practices. Magadu emphasises the importance of minimising moisture exposure.
“The first thing we need to do is to make sure that we control the moisture,” he says. This involves reducing the time animals spend in muddy areas and ensuring proper drainage in animal housing areas.
Magadu recommends these preventative measures:
- Regularly clearing sharp objects like rocks and debris from pastures and enclosures helps minimise injuries and potential bacterial entry points.
- Providing zinc supplements plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin and hair and acts as a natural barrier against infection.
- Finally, avoiding overcrowding in animal housing areas is vital. Overcrowding leads to a lot of mud and moisture accumulating, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and increasing the risk of foot-rot outbreaks.
Regulatory guidelines
Regarding regulatory guidelines, Nkosi stresses the importance of vigilance, especially in cases where foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is suspected.
“Regulatory guidelines for managing foot rot are generally not specified. However, notifying the local state veterinarian is crucial if FMD is suspected.”
By adhering to these guidelines and seeking veterinary assistance, farmers can effectively manage foot-rot outbreaks and protect their livestock.

Foot rot poses significant economic challenges for livestock producers. Nkosi highlights the substantial productivity losses and treatment costs associated with this condition.
“Livestock farming experiences decreased weight gains, lower milk yields, and reduced reproductive performance due to foot rot. Treatment costs can range from R1 700 to R5 700 per case, imposing a considerable financial burden on producers,” he explains.
Treatment options
According to Magadu, if foot rot is detected in livestock, prompt action is crucial to minimise complications and promote healing. Here are the recommended steps for treatment:
- The first step is to isolate affected animals from healthy ones. This helps prevent the spread of the infection through direct contact or contaminated environments.
- Cleaning and disinfecting the affected area are essential. Magadu recommends using soapy water to clean the lesions, followed by veterinarian-approved disinfectants.
- Veterinarians may also prescribe antibiotics to combat the bacterial infection, particularly in severe cases. Additionally, anti-inflammatory medications can help manage the pain and swelling associated with foot rot.
- Addressing fly strike, a secondary complication caused by flies laying eggs in the lesions, is vital. Proper wound care and fly control measures are crucial to prevent further complications and promote healing.
Management practices for breeding
Foot rot can be particularly disruptive during the breeding season, impacting the health and performance of breeding stock. Here are some key management practices farmers can implement to minimise foot rot risk during this crucial time:
- Minimise mud: Magadu reiterates the importance of moisture control. Especially during the wet season, maintaining sanitary conditions to reduce foot rot outbreaks is extra important. Farmers should strategically move feeding and watering troughs to avoid creating overly muddy areas where animals congregate. Additionally, providing well-drained areas for breeding animals to rest and socialise is crucial.
- Regular cleaning: Regularly cleaning and removing manure from breeding enclosures is essential. Manure accumulation creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, including those responsible for foot rot. By maintaining clean and dry environments, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of foot rot outbreaks during the breeding season.
- Proper space allocation: As previously mentioned, overcrowding contributes to muddiness and increases the risk of foot rot transmission. During the breeding season, ensure adequate space allocation in breeding areas to prevent animals from being crammed together. This allows for better movement, reduces manure buildup, and promotes faster drying of the ground.
- Foot examination: While routine hoof trimming is not recommended for foot rot prevention, including a quick foot examination during breeding stock health checks can be beneficial. Early detection of any lesions or signs of lameness allows for prompt isolation and treatment, minimising the spread of the infection within the breeding herd.
- Vaccination potential (future considerations): As Magadu mentioned, research is ongoing to develop a vaccine against foot rot. While not yet available, a future vaccine could prove to be a valuable tool for further reducing foot rot risk during breeding seasons. Farmers should stay informed about advancements in foot rot control methods and consider vaccination as an option once it becomes commercially available.
Challenges and solutions
Meanwhile, Nkosi emphasises the importance of educating farmers about foot rot and its management. “Farmers can access various educational materials to learn about foot rot and its control. State veterinarians, animal health pharmaceutical companies, and online academies offer valuable resources,” he says.
These educational avenues provide farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognise and manage foot rot effectively.
Despite the absence of specific government subsidies for foot rot management, Nkosi highlights available support services. “The state offers subsidised or free clinical veterinary services to assist poorer farmers,” he says. Additionally, private veterinary clinics provide consultation and assistance, ensuring farmers receive the necessary support to combat foot-rot outbreaks.
Technological solutions
To mitigate the economic impact of foot rot, Nkosi advocates for the adoption of modern technologies.
“Wearable sensors and machine learning algorithms offer innovative solutions for early detection and management of foot rot,” he explains. These sensors, when attached to animals’ limbs, monitor gait patterns in real time, enabling farmers to intervene promptly and administer targeted treatments.
By leveraging these technologies, livestock producers can proactively manage foot-rot outbreaks and improve the overall health and welfare of their herds.
