In the challenging world of livestock farming, Mashapa Simon Mokatsane stands as a beacon of success, attributing his thriving cattle herd to the use of Voermol Premix 450. Mokatsane, a native of the small town of Paul Roux in the eastern Free State, near Bethlehem, farms a variety of livestock including beef cattle and meat goats. His farming adventure began five years ago and he has not looked back since.
“My primary focus is on cattle farming, with a smaller herd of sheep and goats,” he clarifies in an interview with Food For Mzansi.
Enthusiastically, he shares his reliance on licks and feed supplements from Voermol across all seasons. “Currently, during winter, referred to as the yellow season, we’re supplementing our livestock with Premix 450,” he says.
Voermol Premix 450 is a cost-effective, ready-mixed maintenance lick for cattle on dry veld. It’s a protein and trace mineral supplement that enhances the intake and digestion of dry roughage by providing proteins, minerals, and vitamins which stimulate the rumen’s micro-organisms.
Explaining the purpose of the lick, Mokatsane highlights that Premix 450 at an intake of 400 to 500 grams per day ensures his cattle ingest 180 to 225 grams of protein daily.
“Its primary role is to maintain the cattle’s body condition throughout winter,” he notes.
Health benefits of Premix 450
While Mokatsane enjoys using the supplement, he’s more pleased to witness the benefits of the Premix 450 supplement.
“I can indeed see the benefit. Currently, none of my cattle have shown a loss of body condition.”
Usually, without supplementation, animals would visibly lose weight at this time of year. For Mokatsane, the objective has always been to ensure the health of the cattle, even in winter.
“Since we’ve been supplementing with Premix 450, good body conditions have been maintained throughout,” he acknowledges.
There’s still a month remaining in the dry season, but Mokatsane remains optimistic that his cattle are thriving, not merely surviving. “There’s a long way to go, but so far the results are positive,” he observes.
Saving money with Voermol
For any farmer, obtaining quality products and saving money is paramount. Mokatsane believes that he has saved money since he started using Premix 450.
“By the beginning of August, our cattle will start calving. Without supplements, they would have lost body condition, making it difficult to sustain a pregnancy,” he explains.
Mokatsane admits to experiencing these types of losses before. However, since he started using Premix 450, he has noticed significant value added to his cattle’s health. For this, he expresses his gratitude for the protein supplement.
