In a move aimed at fostering collaboration and enhancing trade opportunities, the minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development, Thoko Didiza, today hosted a comprehensive information-sharing session on the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (Agoa).
The event, held in Pretoria, was attended by key players from the agricultural sector, including farmers, agribusinesses, traders, and food processors, all gearing up for the 20th Agoa Forum set to commence on Thursday, 2 November 2023 in Johannesburg.
The primary objective of the session was to underscore the pivotal role that Agoa plays in providing the agricultural sector with access to the lucrative US market. By facilitating an open dialogue, Didiza emphasised the significance of Agoa in fostering international trade relations and bolstering the South African agricultural sector.
One of the highlights of the session was the presentation by representatives from the US department of agriculture, minister counsellor Ali Abdi, and an agricultural attaché, who outlined the array of opportunities available to South African producers interested in exporting agricultural goods to the United States.
This insight into the US market dynamics provided attendees with a valuable perspective on the potential avenues for growth and collaboration.
Additionally, the department of trade, industry and competition, represented by ambassador Xolelwa Mulumbi-Peter, contributed vital information regarding the performance of Agoa over the years. He shared valuable data, including the top three agricultural goods that have successfully entered the US market due to Agoa, offering attendees a comprehensive understanding of the market trends and consumer demands.
The information-sharing initiative was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the more than 260 participants who attended the hybrid session. Attendees praised the session for its role in enhancing their understanding of Agoa’s benefits and providing valuable insights into Africa’s position in the upcoming forum.
