In this edition of Farmer’s Inside Track, the Voermol Feeds team takes the spotlight to explore their expansive range of products tailored for farmers across Mzansi. The products enhance farm productivity and profitability.

Farmer Simon Mokatsane optimises production with Premix 450 which he uses during winter months.

Dr Josef van Wyngaard, acting national technical manager at Voermol Feeds, shares his expertise on the Premix 450 product and how beneficial it is.

Van Wyngaard starts the conversation with some of the challenges farmers face when it comes to their animals during winter. Two of the main concerns are body condition and weight loss of animals.

“That is basically due to the nutritional deficiencies in the veld during the winter, so all nutrients move down to the roots and you [are] sitting with mature fodder on top,” he explains.

The role of Premix 450 during winter

He further talks about Premix 450, a ready-mix protein supplement, and reassures listeners that this is one of the top five products of Voermol.

“It’s got its salt component, trace minerals, and other minerals, and it has a high level of vitamin A.”

Essentially, all the minerals that are in the protein supplement are important for the maintenance of the animal.

Nutritional value

He continues to share some of the nutritional value and how the supplement is such an advantage during winter.

“This is why we supplement a protein lick in that time to fill that gap and to ensure that we adhere to the animals’ protein requirement,” he explains.

Because the supplement is a ready-mix product it is quite easy to use, Van Wyngaard gives practical steps to ensure that the product is used correctly.

In this episode, Van Wyngaard also discusses:

  • What kind of animal can use the product;
  • The difference between Dundee Lick and Premix 450; and
  • Advice to farmers.
