Livestock farmer Zabion de Wee knows a thing or two about just how competitive the farming industry can get. But it is through problem-solving that he gains strength and inspiration.
In this episode of Farmers Inside Track, we learn how De Wee is revolutionising the agricultural sector as John Deere’s business development manager for Africa and the Middle East. He also has tips for how to cope when faced with adversity.
As a young boy, De Wee had always dreamed of becoming a farmer. For him mistakes are part of the agricultural trade and always presents the opportunity to learn and improve. In the episode he shares lessons learned amid tough times on his farming journey.
“When challenges come, for me it’s opportunity to grow,” he says.
De Wee acknowledges that there were times when he felt that others did not believe in his capabilities as a farmer, however, that has never stopped him from working towards his goals.
A journey of lifelong learning
As John Deere’s new business development manager, De Wee is able to drive the kind of change he wants to see. He also credits John Deere’s encouragement for his lifelong learning journey.
“I always see myself in the development space where I want to help farmers. Agriculture is a difficult journey for us, I want to make it easier [for them]. I want to warn farmers and say ‘do not do this, because it might get difficult’, or ‘this is the faster way to success’.”
In this episode, De Wee also shares being able to buy his first Toyota Hilux bakkie. A moment that still gives him goosebumps when thinking about it.
