As winter approaches, livestock farmers nationwide are confronted with the task of ensuring the health and productivity of their animals. While grazing constitutes the foundation of a ruminant’s diet, it may not suffice during the colder months. This is where supplementary feeding shines, bridging the gap between what animals get naturally and what they need to thrive.
Espee Olivier, KwaZulu-Natal area manager and marketing specialist at Molatek, emphasises the importance of focusing on livestock nutrition, especially in winter.
“Livestock require specific amounts of roughage, protein, trace elements, vitamins, water, and energy. Clean drinking water and grazing on grass or veld make up most of their daily intake.
“But to achieve optimal production, we need to supplement their diet and address any nutritional shortfalls present in the natural environment,” he explained in this podcast episode.
Different seasons, different supplements
So, what does a successful supplementary feeding programme require? According to Olivier, careful planning.
“The age, weight, and production stage of the animal, along with the availability and quality of natural resources on the farm, are all crucial aspects to consider.”
He also discusses aligning the animals’ highest nutritional needs with the peak grazing season for optimal benefit. Furthermore, the ideal supplement type and quantity will vary.
“Supplements for summer and winter rainfall regions often differ. During the rainy season, natural veld offers superior nutrition, so the supplement type will be different from what’s needed during the dry season when the veld is nutrient-deficient. Consulting a qualified animal nutritionist or a reputable feed supplier is strongly recommended, especially for those new to supplementary feeding,” he explains.
In this episode, he also discusses:
- Balancing the nutritional equation;
- Environmental considerations; and
- Choosing the right supplements.
