Greetings farmers
As we wrap the month of May, there are jam-packed events to look forward to. We start off by saving the date for two Hortgro events, one being a webinar and the other a two-day research showcase event. If you are interested in agritech, the red meat industry will be tackling technology within the commodity.
Food For Mzansi is hosting two farmers’ days this week, one in Bloemfontein and the other in Brits. There will also be an agricultural workers’ day in Upington. We finish the week with the Agricultural Research Council’s webinar on sustainable livestock breeding.
Monday 26 May
Sustainable Packaging and Plastics Webinar
Join Hortgro for a critical discussion on the future of packaging and plastics in the South African pome and stone fruit industry. As sustainability becomes non-negotiable, this session brings together insights and industry expertise.
Topics under discussion include the latest developments in plastics and packaging, understanding the EU’s new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), circularity and meeting plastics targets, and research into alternative packaging and postharvest quality. This is a must-attend for anyone committed to driving change and staying ahead of global compliance standards.

RMIS Technology Webinar
Join facilitator Ernest Makua, a RMIS livestock technical advisor, and guest speaker Dr Ben Greyling, research team manager for beef cattle improvement at the Agricultural Research Council, for a webinar on 27 May 2025 titled “How basic science and technology assist in turning cows into capital.”

Research Showcase
Every second year, industry stakeholders are allowed to gain perspective about the research projects that are taking place to safeguard and improve our industry. For this purpose, Hortgro Science created the research showcase focusing on pome and stone fruit. Most producers do not realise how much work is being done and how many people are involved, and the showcase creates an opportunity to give context about Hortgro Science’s role in the industry.

Food For Mzansi Farmers’ Day
Food For Mzansi is heading to the Free State, Bloemfontein and Brits in North West. The agricultural workers day will be held in Upington in the Northern Cape. Details are as follows:
