Hello Mzansi! This week, we’re kicking things off with a livestock auction hosted by the Kaallaagte Farmers’ Association in the Free State. Then on Tuesday, the European Commission will host an online training session for food entrepreneurs on intellectual property.
On Wednesday farmers get to apply for state land, and the commemoration of Plant Health Day follows on Thursday. On Friday farmers are invited to a worm farming training taking place in KwaZulu-Natal.

Free State livestock auction
The Kaallaagte Farmers’ Association, representing a group of 15 newly-commercialising black farmers, is hosting their second livestock auction. The auction is set to take place on the grounds of the Gilead Boerevereniging between Lindley and Petrus Steyn.
On offer will be 200 cows, 120-calves, 40 slaughter cattle and 40 store cows.

Webinar on the agri food industry
The European Commission through its International IP SME helpdesk will host an online training session that will teach small businesses in the food industry how to successfully grow their businesses using intellectual property (IP).
Entrepreneurs in the food industry certainly do not want to miss this event, as guests and experts will be looking at why IP is important and how to benefit from IP in the agri-food sector.

Application to lease state farms
In line with the state lease and disposal policy, the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development invites potential lessees to apply to lease some of the farmland available in Mzansi.

International Plant Health Day declaration
From now May 12 will be known as the International Day of Plant Health following an announcement by United Nations General Assembly.
The day is a key legacy of the International Year of Plant Health, which was marked in 2020–2021. This day will allow all relevant stakeholders to continue with the effort of increasing public awareness on the importance of plant health.
The department of agriculture, land reform, and rural development has welcomed the announcement.

Worm farming training
The ABC agribusiness corner invites you to a worm farming training happening in KwaZulu-Natal. They will train farmers to raise earthworms for breeding purposes (vermiculture) and provide extension services and market access.
The projects are designed to benefit smallholder farmers and individuals who have no farming or agricultural background.
