In response to the escalating challenges posed by climate change and the growing global population, Exxaro, a prominent figure in the mining industry, has initiated a collaboration with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the EKIM Wildlife Centre of Excellence.
This alliance aims to integrate scientific research and technological advancements into Exxaro’s operations, aligning with their Sustainable Development Goals and environmental, social, and governance commitments.
The partnership, spearheaded by ARC’s expertise in research and the EKIM Wildlife Centre’s dedication to environmental excellence, seeks to pioneer sustainable solutions that address pressing issues in mining and beyond.
Key initiatives include the propagation of indigenous plant species for post-mining rehabilitation, studies supporting local economic development through innovative land use practices, and carbon monitoring strategies crucial for climate change adaptation.
Dr Julius Tjelele, ARC’s animal production research team manager specialising in range and forage sciences, emphasised the partnership’s potential impact:
“Collaborating with Exxaro and the EKIM Wildlife Centre of Excellence represents a significant step towards redefining sustainability in mining,” said Tjelele. “By leveraging scientific research, we aim to enhance environmental responsibility and foster socio-economic development.”
The historic signing ceremony, marking the commencement of the partnership between Exxaro, ARC, and the EKIM Wildlife Centre of Excellence, will take place at the ARC’s headquarters in Pretoria, on Monday, 15 July 2024.
