Founded in 2022, Moedi Wines embodies a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. In the Faces of Summer campaign, founder Lesego Holzapfel highlights why her 100% mourvèdre rosé and chenin blanc make the ideal companions for summer.
With every Moedi Wines bottle, you are not just buying wine but supporting a mission of empowerment. The brand founded in 2022 by Holzapfel, derives its name from Setswana, meaning ‘water’.
Moedi Wines comes from the Swartland region in the Western Cape.
“The region is a little bit drier, unlike Stellenbosch with this abundance of water. What we love about it is that the dryness gives our wines character. Our chenin blanc has a bit of a twist, similar to our rosé mourvèdre,” Holzapfel explains.
Committed to sustainability
In 2022, Holzapfel started Moedi Wines to create a uniquely African brand in the global wine industry. Moedi is more than just wine, she explains, it is a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
When you drink a glass of Moedi wine you know beekeepers in rural villages are getting a bit more sustainable income. You know the natural environment is a small step closer to healing. And you know an orphan is getting a world-class education that can ripple into thriving families, communities, and country.
“This brand talks about the essence of connecting Africa, its people, and the flora and fauna. All of those play such an important part, there’s this symbiotic element to it. We also focus on the importance of bees because they are essential for food production,” Holzapfel explains.
Chenin blanc with a fresh finish
In Food For Mzansi’s Faces of Summer campaign, Holzapfel shares why her fruity chenin blanc should be a top choice for wine enthusiasts this summer.
With tasting notes that leave you wanting more, Moedi Chenin Blanc is an experience that connects you to the very essence of Africa. The tasting notes are a symphony of tropical fruit and green apple aromas that entice the senses.
With each sip, its good minerality leads to a fleshy and fresh finish that lingers on the palate.
“It’s a perfect wine for summer. If you’re braaing, it goes well with your chicken or a fish braai.”
It also pairs seamlessly with salads, making it an ideal companion for light fare.
“We are in the process of exporting. The first batch of our wines will be going out at the end of December to the U.S.A.,” Holzapfel says.
Summer perfect rosé
Their Moedi Rosé boasts enchanting aromas of raspberry and pomegranate. Ripe watermelon notes with a tantalising cranberry finish. This 100% mourvèdre is perfect for summer platters and the warmth of a hearty tomato-based stew during the colder winter months.
“It goes well with a duck dish. The word that comes up when I think of this wine is ‘sexy’. It makes you look fun and funky.
“I would also pair it with a nice dessert like a koeksister,” Holzapfel shares.
