Himalaya Wellness Company and Multi-Globis have introduced Pulmoboost and Liv.52 Protec, providing rapid relief during avian influenza outbreaks. R.K. Rao, VP of Himalaya, underscores the vital role of these treatments, offering hope to the beleaguered South African poultry industry.

A collaboration between Multi-Globis and Himalaya Wellness has introduced two powerful treatments to mitigate the disastrous effects of an avian influenza (AI) outbreak in South Africa on the poultry industry.

R.K. Rao, vice president of Himalaya, shares valuable insights into the development of a two-pack product that effectively enhances the health and productivity of broiler and layer birds.

The multi-billion-Rand poultry sector is currently battling its biggest avian influenza epidemic in at least four decades, leading to severe shortages of table eggs and poultry meat in many South African provinces. Two herbal treatments, Pulmoboost and Liv.52 Protec, act quickly during respiratory distress in AI while re-establishing the bird’s metabolism through improved feed intake in infected birds.

An immediate solution

“We advise farmers to use these products as an immediate solution and as part of their daily feeding routine for broilers, layers, and chicks. These products will help reduce the mortality rate in the poultry industry,” says Rao in an interview with Food For Mzansi.

“Pulmoboost alleviates respiratory discomfort in broilers and layers, stabilising breathing through its mucolytic activity. Liv.52 Protec increases bird survival rates by stimulating the liver, restoring hunger, and enhancing metabolism,” he says.

Both products were introduced in South Africa last year and have been well-received, with Pulmoboost gaining acceptance in one of the largest poultry farms in South Africa and among middle-order and smaller poultry farms.

“We hope to publish some field trial results soon in South Africa during the course of 2024. It’s crucial for farmers to take precautions and use preventive measures to stop the spread of avian influenza and lessen its severity,” he adds.

The reality shaking farmers

The decrease in income due to avian influenza and the subsequent culling of affected poultry farms has led to highly stressful economic situations. The possibility of unemployment adds to the social and economic suffering.

It is commendable to see the South African government taking proactive steps to assist struggling businesses amid the AI outbreak, adds Rao.

“South Africa boasts world-class poultry practices in broilers and layers. AI is a well-known viral disease that affects chicks from birth, leading to an immediate mortality rate. Protecting the industry is vital. Our product enhances bird’s immunity and helps them maintain their immune status,” he explains.

Using the two-pack product

Liv.52 Protec Liquid and Pulmoboost can be combined and fed to the animals. Pulmoboost can be used from day-old chicks to production. Liv.52 Protec powder can be added as a supplement to the feed.

“It is recommended to use Pulmoboost soon after receiving the day-old chicks to alleviate any respiratory distress resulting from crowding and transportation. This approach aids the birds in adapting to the upcoming weeks and prevents them from succumbing to the stress of transportation,” he advises.

Scientifically proven to work its magic

Both Liv.52 Protec and Pulmoboost are highly effective formulations scientifically designed to yield predictable outcomes in managing poultry health and productivity. These formulations are safe, meet the highest quality standards, and are not subject to withdrawal or quarantine restrictions.

“Both Liv.52 Protec powder and Pulmoboost enhance the liveability and vigour of poultry birds, with significant positive economic implications for the poultry industry,” he adds. These products are registered with DAFF with the following approved codes:

  1. Liv.52 Protec Liquid: V33142
  2. Liv.52 Protec Powder: V33143
  3. Pulmoboost: V33144

Himalaya Wellness – a company history

While the focus is often on Himalaya Wellness products and services, the company itself has a rich history dating back to 1930 when it was established as a family-run business. Since then, it has provided the medical community with scientifically designed herbal and Ayurvedic products.

“The company’s approach is rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda, emphasizing a holistic wellness approach for both human and animal health,” he explains.

There is no doubt that Himalaya Wellness also offers scientifically designed herbal treatments for companion care and animal farming.
