Agricultural organisations concluded Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a truly remarkable fashion. Throughout October, the significance of breast cancer resonated deeply with Mzansi’s dedicated farmers, resilient farm workers, and influential agricultural decision-makers.

The designation of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in South Africa reflects a nationwide drive to raise awareness of this debilitating disease across all races and class structures.

Enjoying a “Cuppa for Cansa”

The RSA Group, which specialises in the sales and marketing of fresh fruit and vegetables on behalf of farmers, hosted a special “Cuppa for Cansa” event on a wet and cold summer’s day in Johannesburg recently.

Jaco Oosthuizen, CEO of the RSA Group, and Johan Koen, CFO of the RSA Group, spent the morning at their offices sharing a very welcome hot cuppa with some members of the RSA Group community.

“Of course, there was a lot of talk about our mighty Bokke! And about life in the fresh produce industry. But, far more importantly, the morning created a great opportunity to raise awareness – and funds – for the Cancer Association of South Africa,” RSA Group said.

Farmers and farmworkers unite in Limpopo

In Maruleng, Limpopo participants in the Metz social employment fund under the Lima Rural Development Foundation wrapped up Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a fun walk.

“This inspiring gathering aimed to educate and raise awareness about breast cancer, offering insights on how to reduce the risk of this disease. As well as to promote a healthy lifestyle, a fun walk was organised, encouraging everyone to get active,” the foundation said.

The ward councillor, a pastor, and a retired nurse also participated and shared their wisdom.

Together, they made a powerful statement in support of breast cancer awareness and the importance of a healthy, active life.

Facts about breast cancer:

  • Early detection of the condition can lead to effective treatment and a positive prognosis. About 90% of patients survive for many years after diagnosis when breast cancer is detected during the early stages.
  • Regular self-breast examinations and regular mammograms are key to early detection.
  • Presenting yourself early for treatment may result in more effective treatment, leading to a reduction in pain and suffering and a significant decrease in the loss of life.
