Mase Manopole has recently been reappointed as the MEC for the Northern Cape’s department of agriculture, rural development and land reform. Manopole has assured her commitment to making a tangible difference in farmers’ lives in the province.
Manopole said she plans for the Northern Cape to lead in job creation and agricultural excellence as it has before. She emphasised the importance of collaborating with stakeholders in the sector.
Prioritising resources for all farmers
“Our plans entail meeting the diverse needs of both small and large-scale farmers as it is crucial for sustainable growth of our agricultural sector.
“Importantly, inclusive policy when necessary, developing new policies and implementation thereof that provide equitable support and resources to both small and large-scale farmers, in order to create job opportunities,” she said.
Manapole said access to resources is crucial for farmers to ensure food security across the Northern Cape, especially in parts impacted by devastating droughts for many years.
“Enhancing access to funding, training and technology to help farmers to improve productivity and sustainability. Facilitating better market access for small-scale farmers through cooperative models and direct marketing initiatives.
“Promoting agricultural research in collaboration with [the] Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and innovations to address challenges and optimise farming practices for various scales,” she said.
Five focus areas to drive NC agriculture
Manopole has identified key focus areas to drive the advancement of the agricultural sector:
- Climate resilience
- Women and youth empowerment
- Food security
- Collaborations
- Policy improvement
“I am honoured and pleased for the trust bestowed upon me to serve in the seventh administration. I am committed to working tirelessly to support and enhance the farmers within the sector in order to ensure food security for our province,” she said.
