In this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track,  Agrijobs CEO Marianne van Jaarsveld shares why she believes a qualification is only a foot in the door when graduates go job hunting.

She starts off by giving insight into her background. According to Van Jaarsveld, her grandfather planted the seed for her agricultural career.

Her main reason for starting Agrijobs is because she understood how difficult it is for young people to know exactly what they want to do with their lives.

Determine your own path

“It’s a very important thing to understand what you want to do eventually, nobody knows. Even when you graduate, you don’t always know what it is you’d like to do. A way of elimination is to take on any job,” she explains in the podcast episode.

Accepting what comes your way is the best to learn a skill and transfer it, even if you do not like it. What helps is to identify what you do not like and this will steer any graduate towards their own interests, she advises.

In the episode, she also talks about how new graduates can overcome some of the barriers they face when finding a placement, as well as untapped opportunities for young South Africans interested in pursuing a career in agriculture.

In this episode, Van Jaarsveld also discusses:

  • How her food science degree opened doors for her;
  • Challenges graduates face and how they can overcome them; and
  • Where young people can look for jobs.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
