Noluthando Khambule is the author of “Libo’s Corner”, a book that introduces rural children to the fundamentals of business principles in a fun and not-so-intimidating way.

In the book, Khambule tells the story of a group of rural children getting ready for their first market day. The story, an excellent instructional tool, teaches young minds business fundamentals.

Equipping young minds

Khambule shares the importance of teaching young minds about business.

“We need to break down the basics on different levels because we cover suppliers, pricing, advertising, and marketing. These are all concepts that adults are aware of but now we are narrating it from a kid’s perspective,” she explains.

Something for the adults too

Khambule further adds that though the book is great for children, she believes how it is written and illustrated can help grassroots entrepreneurs pave the way in their business too.

“The response [on the book] has been positive. There have been a lot of referrals as well. Parents are noticing children asking questions as they are going to stores. This is a great conversation starter,” she explains.

In this episode, she also discusses:
  • How conversations around business ownership in rural communities are shifting;
  • The potential impact of the book and more.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
