Amid tough economic conditions, more and more entrepreneurs are turning to chicken farming to supplement their income. In fact, with broiler production, even beginners can make a lot of money within as little as five weeks.

This is the view of Farmer’s Inside Track Academy co-founder Kobus Louwrens. The academy is currently accepting last-minute registrations for its next one-day training session on Saturday, 19 March in Cullinan, north of Pretoria. A week later – on Saturday, 26 March – the same workshop is presented in Pietermaritzburg.

“The workshops attract a great diversity of people,” says Louwrens. “Many are looking for a side-hustle. Broiler production is the ideal niche for beginners because it doesn’t require a lot of start-up money.”

What to expect at workshops

The Pretoria workshop will be presented by Dr Ethel Zulu-Mokwele, founder of Bee Tree Farm. Besides being a farmer and trainer, she is also a qualified nutritionist.

As an experienced chicken farmer, she understand what it takes to build a business from the ground up.

The Saturday workshop will cover a range of broiler management topics to ensure that you hit the ground running.

From chicken housing, equipment and shed preparation to litter, rearing management, feed and feeding, lighting, ventilation, health and biosecurity, Zulu-Mokwele will cover a variety of topics..

Meanwhile, Dawn Noemdoe, Food For Mzansi’s manager: audience and engagement, says, “There is a big demand for broiler chickens, and I would recommend it for go-getters. It’s something you can do in your own backyard.”

Experts have listed broiler production as one of the ten most lucrative farming ideas for 2022, adds Louwrens.

“From Claremont and Khayelitsha to Pretoria and Gqeberha, excitement is really building for the next workshops. It’s ideal for beginner farmers who want a quick profit. Broiler chickens grow fast. You can start selling them after just five weeks.”

Food technologist Precious Hlongwane attended one the previous training sessions. She says, “Attending this workshop has ignited that passion that I had for poultry farming. I believe that with the new knowledge I will be able to start with my own poultry farm.”

To register for the Pretoria and Pietermaritzburg workshops, go to farmersinsidetrack.co.za or send a WhatsApp to 071 147 0388. The registration fee of R1 950 includes training as well as mentorship by an experienced farmer.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 12 global awards in the first three years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
