Summer is here, and strawberries are taking centre stage. These vibrant berries are not only delicious but also incredibly nutritious. Chef Asi Ndamase, a culinary expert, shares her love for strawberries and offers creative ways to incorporate them into your summer meals.

From sweet treats to savoury dishes, strawberries can elevate any meal. In a Health For Mzansi article, Ndamase suggests grilling them with plums and feta for a unique and flavourful combination. Or, for a refreshing drink, try a strawberry coulis mixed into a summer mocktail.

“Strawberries are a flexible fruit that can be used in almost everything, from savoury to sweet dishes,” says Ndamase. “I definitely love enjoying them in my summer salads.”

More than just a tasty treat

Beyond their culinary appeal, strawberries are a powerhouse of nutrients. Registered dietitian Pheladi Makwela highlights the benefits of these berries, including improved iron absorption, healthy gut function, and protection for the heart, skin, and hair.

“The health benefits include improved iron absorption, which supports red blood cell formation, maintenance of healthy gut movement, and protection of the heart, skin, and hair growth,” Makwela says.

To incorporate these juicy fruits into your daily diet, Makwela suggests trying overnight strawberry oats, smoothies, frozen treats, or simply topping your favourite desserts with fresh berries.

So, this summer, let strawberries be your go-to fruit. They’re not only delicious but also a healthy and versatile ingredient that can add a burst of flavour to any meal.
