The Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl in the Western Cape served as the elegant backdrop for the 2023 SA Olive Awards. The event, held yesterday, showcased the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of the country’s extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) from 32 renowned producers, with a total of 82 entries rigorously evaluated by a panel of esteemed local and international judges.

In a ceremony filled with anticipation and celebration, the winners were revealed across three style categories: delicate, medium, and intense.

Chairperson of the SA Olive Industry, Richard Allen, congratulated all the winners and acknowledged the challenges faced by local producers during the year, including a poor harvest with lower yields and daily obstacles like load shedding.

Despite these challenges, South African extra virgin olive oil producers continued to deliver remarkable quality, earning recognition not only locally but also on the international stage. The 82 entries from 32 producers demonstrated their commitment to excellence and dedication to their craft.

SA Olive expressed its pride and gratitude to all participants, judges, organizers, and sponsors, MORI-TEM and Pieralisi, for their support in showcasing the exceptional quality of locally produced EVOOs.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
