The annual Trophy Spirits Show, sponsored by Investec, concluded its 2024 edition with a spotlight on the finest international and local spirits, liqueurs, and aperitifs. Esteemed for its rigorous judging process and broad participation, this year’s event showcased a diverse array of entries across seven categories.

A total of 106 submissions from 17 producers and distributors featured 56 brands, with whiskey leading the pack with 33 entries, spanning regions from Scotland to South Africa and Ireland. The competition also featured notable entries in gin, brandy, tequila, rum, vodka, and cream liqueur categories, reflecting a global trend towards premium beverages.

One of the standout moments was the unprecedented tie for the Best Whisky of Show award, recognising exceptional grain and malt whiskies.

Van Ryn’s secured the Single Potstill Brandy Aged 20 Years, underscoring its prominence in the brandy category. The gin segment, rebounding from earlier setbacks, showcased resilience with 26 entries and accolades in both traditional and flavoured categories.

“As headline sponsor of the Trophy Spirits Show, we pride ourselves in partnering with our clients and creating experiences for those who never settle for ordinary,” said Itumeleng Merafe, head of private banking at Investec, emphasising the economic and cultural contributions of the spirits industry to South Africa.

International judges, including David T Smith and Louise Martin, alongside local experts, ensured a comprehensive evaluation process resulting in 11 gold medals and 11 Best in Class trophies across various categories, recognising excellence in craftsmanship and innovation.

The Trophy Spirits Show continues to set benchmarks in discernment and celebration within the industry, emphasising the artistry and dedication of distillers worldwide.
