With each community garden, Seed 2 Harvest is bringing hope to a growing number of individuals. The creator, Shaun Cairns, is committed to using his organic garden in a box-starter kit to jumpstart as many food gardens as he can in as many communities across the continent.
In this episode, Cairns explains how the relaunched kit opened doors for him during the three Covid years. Seed 2 Harvest started by rebranding and selling existing organic fertiliser solutions, which provided a foundation for further growth. They soon identified a gap in the market for affordable options and developed their own fertiliser blend, BioBoost.
“We see the move across Africa that people want to go organic, and so we’re stepping into that opportunity now,” he explains.
The importance of soil health
The conversation goes beyond just products, highlighting Seed 2 Harvest’s core philosophy. Soil health is key, and the company focuses on creating a self-sustaining system through organic matter and fostering microbial activity, instead of just fixing problems with chemicals.
“We at Seed 2 Harvest have made a pledge to those who buy from us, who are part of our culture and part of our family, that we will walk this journey with you from seed to harvest,” he says.
Their core value lies in their commitment to supporting growers throughout their journey. They offer mentorship programmes alongside their products to ensure successful harvests and increase grower confidence. In this episode, he also discusses.
In this episode, Cairns also discusses:
- Household food security project;
- Raining programmes, social media engagement, and community initiatives;
- Empowering growers through education and mentorship.
