Excitement is building for the South African Agricultural Awards (SAAA) 2025, one of the highlights of the country’s agricultural calendar.

The awards take place on Friday, 7 November 2025, at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome in KwaZulu-Natal, bringing together farmers, industry leaders, and agri-entrepreneurs from across the nation to celebrate outstanding achievements in agriculture.

Food For Mzansi spoke with Neliswa Cele, one of the event organisers, who says this year’s ceremony will shine a spotlight on the people driving innovation, sustainability, and growth in South African farming.

1. What excites you most about this year’s South African Agricultural Awards?

This year’s awards feel particularly special because they represent how far the sector has come in embracing innovation, inclusivity, and diversity. What excites me most is not only the calibre of nominees but also the diversity of the crowd and farmers attending.

You have emerging farmers sitting next to commercial producers, students alongside industry veterans, and communities from every corner of the country coming together to celebrate agriculture. It shows that agriculture belongs to everyone and that the South African Agricultural Awards have become a true reflection of our nation’s unity and progress.

2. Give us a glimpse into some of the competition categories. It’s quite diverse…

The awards cut across the entire agricultural value chain and recognise excellence at every level. Some of the categories I am most proud of include Upcoming and Emerging Farmer of the Year, which honours new farmers making a real impact, and Accessibility in Agriculture, which celebrates individuals and projects creating opportunities for people with disabilities.

We also have exciting categories such as Best Horticulture Project, which highlights innovation and quality in crop production, and the Unsung Hero Award, which recognises those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to uplift their communities. These categories remind us that agriculture is not just about big operations but also about passion, resilience, and people-driven impact.

3. Can you share a fun or memorable moment from past ceremonies?

One of the most memorable and fun moments was when farmers started calling our office to ask about the dress code. Many of them said they did not own formal evening wear and wanted to know what was expected.

It was such a beautiful reminder that for many, this event was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing them arrive, proud and confident, dressed for the occasion, made it even more special. It showed how much the awards mean to those who have worked so hard in the fields and are now being celebrated on a national stage.

4. How do the awards inspire everyday farmers and innovators across the country?

The awards shine a light on the people behind the food on our tables. When farmers see others like them being recognised, it gives them hope and pride. Many of our past winners have gone on to train others, expand their operations, and form co-operatives.

It creates a ripple effect that proves no matter where you start, your contribution matters. The awards also connect farmers to opportunities, mentors, and platforms that help them grow beyond their local communities.

5. So, what can we expect on the big night…

Expect a night of celebration, elegance, and pure inspiration. The ceremony will blend culture, innovation, and entertainment, from powerful stories of resilience to performances that capture the spirit of the land.

We will have dignitaries, industry leaders, and the very farmers who make South Africa proud, all under one roof. Most importantly, expect emotion, pride, and unity. It is not just an awards ceremony; it is a celebration of South Africa’s agricultural heartbeat.

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication.
