Young South African farmers are revolutionising livestock management by using Voermol Feeds products, particularly the Dundee Lick Concentrate. In this episode, Dr Josef van Wyngaard, a specialist from Voermol Feeds, emphasises the critical role of quality in their products.
He explains that the product is specifically formulated for large ruminants, enhancing the nutritional value of low-quality roughage by adding essential trace minerals and a special form of vitamin A.
“We’ve got various specialists working formally, doing the formulations. There’s also a quality management system in place. We get audited annually by at least three role players to verify our quality management system.
“It all starts with the raw materials. We buy high-quality raw materials on an international basis or locally, and we scrutinise it from there. We reject anything that’s slightly off-spec,’’ he says.

Using Dundee Lick Concentrate
In the podcast, Olerile Lekgetho, a cattle farmer from North West, confirms the effectiveness Dundee Lick Concentrate has had on his herd.
“I started using it last year and I never had any problems with cattle that were losing weight. The body condition had dropped but not drastically like before when I was not using it. So it helps a lot,” Lekgetho says.
Dundee Lick Concentrate is designed for large ruminants and is not meant to be fed to small stock. Because it is a concentrate it must be mixed with other raw materials such as maize.
Van Wyngaard explains, “The main benefit with Voermol Dundee Concentrate is you’re actually stimulating the intake of winter veld, which is of a lower quality roughage compared to your grazing that you get during the summertime.
“Voermol Dundee Lick makes it possible with the inclusion of urea, trace minerals, macrominerals, and vitamin A. These all play a role in the effective utilisation of low-quality winter veld. That’s where Dundee Lick comes into play and you really see the effect of that product when you see the animals grazing on low-quality pasture and not lose weight at all.”
In this episode, Van Wyngaard also discusses:
- Mixing and usage;
- Using the product in conjunction with other supplements;
- How soon you can expect to see results and more.
