Although the floriculture industry in South Africa is small, it forms an important part of our agricultural sector. And, given the pressure this industry is experiencing amid the Covid-19 pandemic, International Flower Day is the perfect day to celebrate all their hard work.
Held annually on 19 January, it promotes the connection that people share with each other by showing love and appreciation through the gift of flowers.
It’s been an interesting season for the flower industry, as the lockdown also shut down the events and weddings which normally sustain the flower industry. But, in a grim twist of fate, the flower industry is struggling under the pressure of the increased demand for bereavement bouquets for funerals.
