In South Africa’s ever-evolving agricultural sector, diversification is often the key to sustainability and success. Few embody this principle as effectively as Dwayne Kaschula, a dynamic farmer whose multifaceted approach to farming has earned him widespread recognition.

Operating from Maclear in the Eastern Cape, Kaschula runs Confluence Farming Enterprise, a mixed farming business spanning multiple commodities, including maize, potatoes, livestock, game, and egg production.

His dedication saw him crowned the 2024 Toyota Agri SA Young Farmer of the Year, a prestigious achievement that recognises excellence in the industry. However, for Kaschula, the journey was never about awards – it was about following his passion and building a sustainable future in farming.

A journey rooted in passion

Kaschula’s journey into agriculture was not a sudden career shift but a lifelong calling. “I feel I was born to be a part of agriculture,” he says. His love for farming began in childhood, spending his days outdoors, working with animals, and learning the trade.

He gained experience early on by working for a commercial farmer, where he learned the intricacies of managing a farm as a business. Using his earnings, he purchased a few cattle and negotiated grazing land from his employer. Over time, he expanded his herd by buying animals from neighbours, selling to abattoirs, and reinvesting profits into his growing enterprise.

In 2006, Kaschula achieved a major milestone – purchasing his own farm. From there, he laid the foundation for what would become a multi-faceted agricultural business.

This diversified approach allows him to spread risk across multiple commodities, ensuring steady cash flow and financial stability. “It’s not about how you start but how you end,” he notes.

His decision-making process prioritises long-term sustainability, with an emphasis on selecting crops and livestock that align with market demand and profitability.

In this episode, Kaschula also discusses:
  • Having a strategic business mindset;
  • Risk management in agriculture; and
  • Sustainability.
