Sweet, healthy, and versatile, strawberries are more than just a yummy snack. They are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants that do wonders for your brain, heart, and gut. Speaking to Health For Mzansi, experts explain why and share growing tips for gardeners.

Strawberry’s are a must-have in everything from fresh fruit to processed products like jams, juices, and even cosmetics. However, what if you could grow your own strawberries?

Tshwane-based plant pathologist, Sibongile Jiyane says, “studies show that consuming strawberries helps preserve your brain’s ability to comprehend information as you age.”

She also highlights their role in maintaining heart health. “Strawberries might help you sate your sweet tooth if you’re watching your blood sugar levels.”

“To preserve freshness, it’s recommended to pack strawberries in containers with good ventilation and keep them at optimal storage temperatures, which range between 0-5°C.”

She also shares details about how size, colour, firmness, and total soluble solids are maturity indicators for determining when to harvest strawberries. Indigenous knowledge also relies on “smell”, described as a pleasant or fruity scent, to signal harvest readiness, she shares in the article.
