Onions are one of the most consumed vegetables in South Africa, forming part of nearly every meal across the country. For farmers considering onion production, understanding planting windows, variety selection, soil requirements, and market access is key to success.
Horticulturalist and farmer Tapiwa Masimba shares his knowledge and practical advice for those exploring opportunities in onion production.
Onion production in South Africa takes place across all provinces for the fresh market, with the main growing regions being the Western Cape (Ceres), Northern Cape, North West, and Limpopo, according to the Post-Harvest Innovation Programme.
Masimba explains that onions are daylight-sensitive and highly influenced by regional climates. Each production area has unique planting and harvesting times, ensuring a near-constant national supply.
“Onion is a vegetable which we find in most of the dishes in the South African diet. It is also one of the core veggies, with huge demand in the South African vegetable market.”
Onions consistently rank among the top three vegetables produced in South Africa, after potatoes and tomatoes, according to the national department of agriculture. During the 2023/24 season (July to June), South Africa produced about 696 830 tonnes of onions, which is 8.6% higher than the 641 596 tonnes harvested the previous year.

Planting windows and variety selection
Timing and the choice of onion variety are key to achieving a good harvest. In areas such as the north-western regions of Gauteng, the planting window falls strictly in February. Missing this period can put the entire six-month production cycle at risk, as rainfall and climate conditions may negatively affect the crop.
Onions are daylight-sensitive; short-day or long-day varieties must be carefully matched to the region. “Variety selection is influenced by the area where you want to grow it.”

Masimba explains that onion production is region-specific:
- North West and Gauteng: Planting usually takes place in February to avoid clashes with rainfall during harvest.
- Western Cape: Due to winter rainfall, onions are grown in summer with long-day varieties.
- Other regions like Free State: Each have unique supply windows determined by climate and day length.
This regional spread ensures South Africa maintains an almost year-round onion supply. Onions can also thrive in coastal regions. Masimba says major suppliers ensure year-round production by rotating between Limpopo and the Western Cape.
Export opportunities also exist, with South Africa supplying especially to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Soil preparation and fertility
“You always want to have your land preparation done properly. Your seedbed must be well prepared, starting with reaping, then possibly disking, ploughing, and bed making. Otherwise, the whole crop risks failure right from germination,” Masimba says.
According to an onion production guide by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), the seedbed should have a fine soil texture. Seeds are best sown in rows to allow good ventilation and make weeding easier. Furrows should be spaced about 15cm apart, with seeds planted 10–15mm deep. Avoid sowing too densely, as overcrowding leads to weak, spindly plants that do not transplant well.
Nutrient balance is equally important in onion production. Soil samples should be taken and sent to accredited laboratories to determine nutrient levels. Masimba notes onion sensitivity to nitrogen: “Excessive application can result in thick necks, which in turn reduce yields.”
Water sensitivity and irrigation
Onions require careful water management due to their high water sensitivity. The ARC guide indicates that onions need around 400 to 600mm of water throughout their growing season. Since their roots are mostly found in the top 30mm of soil, it’s important to keep the soil consistently moist. However, irrigation should be stopped about three weeks before harvest.
For large-scale production, Masimba notes that most commercial farmers use centre pivots and sprinkler irrigation.
“When you harvest them out of the soil and put them in windrows, you don’t want any debris or water to fall on the onions. Otherwise, they start rotting before you process them.”

Pest and disease management
Onions are vulnerable to several pests and diseases that can drastically reduce yields and affect market quality. Farmers must adopt proactive strategies that combine monitoring, prevention, and control.
Common pests
- Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci): These tiny insects are the most common and damaging pests. They feed on leaves, causing silvery streaks and reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesise. Thrips thrive in warm, dry conditions and can quickly build up large populations. “They are very common to affect the onion crop. You will definitely, when it becomes warmer, especially have issues with thrips. They love the onion plant,” Masimba says.
- Cutworms and leaf miners: These occasionally attack onion seedlings and leaves, reducing stand establishment and leaf health.
Common diseases
- Purple blotch (Alternaria porri): A fungal disease causing purple-brown lesions on leaves, leading to early leaf death and smaller bulbs.
- Downy mildew (Peronospora destructor): Appears as pale green to yellow patches that develop a greyish-purple mould. It spreads quickly under cool, moist conditions.
- Bacterial soft rot: Often enters through wounds or water damage, causing bulbs to soften and rot in the field or during storage.

Integrated pest management (IPM)
Masimba emphasises that controlling pests and diseases requires an integrated approach:
- Crop stress management: “If you stress the crop, for instance, you don’t give the crop enough water, you weaken the plant, you attract all sorts of insects,” Masimba says.
- Monitoring and early detection: Regular scouting helps detect pests before they cause severe damage.
- Cultural practices: Crop rotation, removal of infected plant material, and ensuring good air circulation reduce disease pressure.
- Biological and organic controls: Beneficial insects such as ladybirds and predatory mites can help control thrips populations. Organic spray products can also reduce pest pressure.
- Chemical control: Fungicides and insecticides are sometimes necessary, but they should be rotated to prevent resistance. Correct timing and dosage are essential for effectiveness. “Even if you spray, it becomes very, very difficult for the crop, especially with systemic pesticides; it becomes difficult for the crop to uptake your systemic pesticides if the crop is stressed,” Masimba notes.
By combining these practices, farmers can reduce reliance on chemicals while improving crop resilience and maintaining high-quality onion yields.
Technology in onion production
Precision technology offers significant advantages for farmers. In large-scale onion production, maintaining straight beds is essential, as it allows mechanical planters, weeders, and harvesters to operate accurately and efficiently without harming the crop.
“I would recommend planting with tractors which have GPS, driver-assist GPS technology, where you input your maps of your fields into the tractor, and you make your beds in a straight line. It saves a lot of effort for the other operations which follow,” Masimba shares.
This ensures that follow-up operations, such as weeding, can be carried out efficiently without machines damaging the crop, as the straight beds keep equipment aligned and on track.
