Vegetable farmers in Lesotho are invited to participate in a ground-breaking study tour organised by Newsday Media in collaboration with Seahlolo newspaper and the Food For Mzansi Group. Scheduled for Thursday, 25 and Friday, 26 July, it promises to boost the skills of Basotho farmers through a series of engaging activities.
The Lesotho vegetable farmers’ study tour – led Newsday Media’s managing editor Lerato Matheka – will provide participants with a wealth of knowledge and experiences that will help them elevate their farming practices. Over the course of the tour, farmers will visit two of Gauteng’s leading vegetable farms, explore the bustling Joburg Fresh Produce Market, and attend Food For Mzansi’s annual Gauteng Farmers’ Day.
Additionally, the tour includes master classes focusing on crucial aspects of quality assurance, market access, and yield improvement. Matheka says these sessions will equip farmers with advanced techniques and strategies that can significantly boost their productivity and market competitiveness.
She adds, “Spots are limited. This is a fantastic opportunity you won’t want to miss. We will travel from Maseru to arrive in Johannesburg on the evening of Wednesday, 24 July. The tour kicks off early the next morning with a visit to Africa’s biggest fresh produce market. It’s first-come, first-served, so make sure to book your place now!”

Through the support of Seahlolo – the only agricultural newspaper in Lesotho – farmers can pay a subsidised rate of M3 500 per person, while group participation (for groups of five or more) is also available at a reduced rate of M3200 per person. This fee includes accommodation, transport from Maseru, master classes, tours, and a networking dinner.
“We are very proud of our partnership with Newsday Media and Seahlolo newspaper in Lesotho,” said Food For Mzansi co-founder Ivor Price.
“Their dedication to empowering Basotho farmers is commendable, and we are thrilled to welcome Lesotho vegetable farmers to the study tour. This collaboration marks just the beginning of our efforts, and we eagerly anticipate further collaborations later this year.”
