Richard Manzini, the dynamic CEO of Daybreak Foods, has quickly set the company on a transformative path. Under his leadership, one of South Africa’s largest integrated poultry producers is undergoing a revitalisation aimed at a brighter, more efficient future.

Since his appointment in January 2024, Manzini has actively focused on understanding the business’s operational inefficiencies and developing a robust, integrated strategy. Already, significant improvements have been observed.

“We spent a lot of time on strategic planning and addressing human capital issues,” he explains in an interview with Food For Mzansi. “One of the key initiatives was redesigning our organisational structure to make decision-making more effective. We now have a decision-making tree that is purpose-fit and aligned with our strategic goals.”

Manzini’s approach to leadership involves a keen focus on understanding the company’s financial health.

“We took a hard look at the balance sheet [of the company previously known as Daybreak Farms], ensuring we are well-funded and have a solid capital structure. This led to our recent move to raise funding, which I have discussed publicly. The goal was to make sure the board understands our path to success, which we’ve clearly defined.”

Overcoming early challenges

Manzini admits, however, that one of the significant challenges he encountered was an entrenched culture resistant to change.

“We had many long-term employees accustomed to certain ways of doing things. While these methods were effective in the past, we needed to become more agile. We also faced issues with data aggregation, which hindered our decision-making processes.”

Manzini introduced new systems and platforms to streamline data management, enabling quicker and better-informed decisions.

He says, “We had a perfect storm of challenges, including bird flu, high feed costs, and load shedding. However, we’ve implemented measures to mitigate these issues and are now moving forward with a clearer strategy.”

“Technology plays a crucial role in our strategy,” he says.

“We run a system-driven business, so having the right software to capture and analyse data is vital. Our flock management systems, slaughter rates, and feed models are all integrated. We’ve invested in infrastructure and are leveraging AI and Power BI to enhance our decision-making capabilities.”

This data-centric approach allows Daybreak Foods to forecast production with high accuracy. “We can now tell our customers exactly what we can produce and when. This transparency and reliability are critical for our business.”

Creating a culture of excellence

Additionally, Manzini has reshaped the leadership team, bringing in new heads of departments who align with his vision for the company.

“We’ve focused on appointing people who are not only skilled but also share our work ethic and integrity. This has created a culture where merit is rewarded, and everyone is driven to perform at their best.”

He emphasises the importance of diversity in building a strong team.

“A diverse team brings a wealth of ideas and perspectives, which is essential for solving complex problems. We’re looking for ethical, curious, and team-oriented individuals who can help us achieve our goals.”

Navigating industry challenges

The avian influenza outbreak has been a significant challenge for the poultry industry, and Daybreak Foods has not been immune.

“We were hit hard, just like everyone else. Our production was impacted, and we’re still in recovery mode. We’ve had to buy external eggs and day-old chicks to keep our operations running.”

To compound matters, his appointment coincided with the country grappling with severe power cuts and rising operational costs.

Manzini introduced a modular energy solution programme, prioritising energy efficiency and backup power solutions like solar and battery storage. “We started putting a modular project in place,” he explains, aiming for sustainability and reduced reliance on diesel generators.

Despite the high costs, Manzini remains committed to maintaining affordable prices for consumers, acknowledging the challenge of not being able to pass on these expenses. “Our focus is on building a resilient operation that can withstand these challenges.”

Reclaiming market share and enhancing production

Daybreak Foods has, however, faced a dip in market share and production volumes. Manzini’s strategy to regain lost ground includes improving service levels and recommitting to customer needs.

His extensive roadshows and customer engagement efforts have already seen a positive response. “We’ve won back some of the customers that had left us,” he notes, highlighting the company’s focus on service excellence and product quality.

Furthermore, Manzini is spearheading several strategic projects aimed at strengthening Daybreak Foods’ position in the market. One key initiative involves rebranding and repositioning the company as a comprehensive food business.

This may include expanding into value-added products within the poultry division and other food processing opportunities. “We are clear that we are a foods business,” he affirms, emphasising the importance of a strong balance sheet and capital structure for future growth.

Ensuring consistency and quality across the four provinces Daybreak Foods currently serves is paramount. Manzini highlights the company’s compliance-driven approach, investing significantly tools and systems to support  state vet inspections and compliance officers.

“We are extremely compliance driven,” he underscores, ensuring that every product meets rigorous quality standards.

Future vision and priorities

Looking ahead, Manzini’s top priorities include turning the business profitable, implementing a clear cost strategy, and reinforcing Daybreak Foods’ reputation as a credible and sustainable brand.

He envisions the company becoming a mainstay in the South African poultry industry, known for its delicious products and attractive employment opportunities. “We will be mainstay, and will be known as a very credible brand,” he states confidently.

Manzini’s leadership is driven by a deep commitment to his employees and their long-term well-being.

“My job and my purpose is to make sure they can plan their lives for the next 20 years,” he shares, noting his dedication to creating a sustainable business environment.

His career lessons emphasise the importance of hard work, a strong support system, and a clear purpose. “Have a purpose and find it,” he advises, advocating for a multifaceted approach to problem-solving and the value of a supportive team.

Manzini is confident that the initiatives implemented during his first six months will set Daybreak Foods on a path to sustained success.

“Our goal is to become more efficient, data-driven, and agile. By focusing on profitability, environmental sustainability, social impact, and good governance, we aim to ensure the long-term success of Daybreak Foods.”
