Irrigating efficiently with limited resources might sound challenging, but according to Nambwale Kalunga, technical advisor for Netafim in Zambia, this is quite obtainable.

In this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track, Kalunga, examines methods in which new farmers can effectively irrigate their crops while at the same decreasing costs.

Explaining how, Kalunga says it all starts with precision irrigation. In the episode, he cautions farmers against placing cost as a key element in their choice of irrigation system.

“There are several factors that must be looked at to practice efficient irrigation and costs is just one of those factors.”

Kalunga also takes farmers through what he believes are key to ensuring good irrigation on the farm.

Smart solutions for when the lights go off

When it comes to power outages, this can often hamper precision irrigation goals, and subsequently have detrimental effects on a farmer’s crop yield. In the podcast episode, Kalunga offers a smart solution to this major headache.

He points to what Netafim offers their clients and shares an interesting view on the pros and cons that off-grid energy solutions hold for precision irrigation.

If you have never heard of a gravity-fed water system and curious to find out more, Kalunga unpacks this as well.

Furthermore, Kalunga says it is important to note the importance of efficient irrigation.

“An efficient irrigation system will help you grow more with less. When you engage in an efficient irrigation system you will see a lot of benefits.”

Kalunga also talks about:

  • Why innovation is crucial for farmers;
  • Best methods to utilise water tanks for irrigation; and more.
