As World Chilli Day heats up today, the humble chilli pepper continues its rise as one of the world’s most exciting ingredients. From fiery curries to spicy snacks, chillies have long been a staple in kitchens across Mzansi, and this year, the global love for the fruit shows no signs of slowing down.

“Chilli peppers are as complex as wine, offering a spectrum of varietals and flavours. Each variety tells a unique flavour story, making chillies an exciting ingredient beyond just heat,” says Shelley Barnard, sales and marketing executive at Cape Herb & Spice.

This complexity has contributed to chilli’s explosive popularity in global food trends, with consumers increasingly seeking bold, multi-sensory experiences in their meals.

Cape Herb & Spice, a South African leader in spice innovation, has been riding this wave of demand since its launch in 1992.

The company exports its range of seasonings, rubs, and sauces to over 30 countries, offering products for everyone from mild heat seekers to serious spice aficionados. One of their standout offerings is the Chilli Sauce Challenge, a punishing selection of five sauces designed to push even the most seasoned chilli lovers to their limits.

But it’s not just about the heat. Cape Herb & Spice has created a product that’s as much about texture as it is about spice – the Chilli Crunch seasoning. Inspired by the globally popular Chinese Chilli Crisp, this dry blend of crispy sweet onion, roasted garlic, and chilli delivers bold flavour and satisfying crunch without the use of oil.

Barnard explains, “The fusion of heat and texture is a massive global food trend. We saw an opportunity to create something innovative, removing the oil but keeping the addictive crunch. Our Chilli Crunch shaker brings together the best of both worlds – intense flavour and a satisfying glow.”

Sourcing the world’s finest chillis

While their innovation continues to excite, Cape Herb & Spice remains committed to sourcing the finest chillies from around the world. Their expert team selects premium chillies from Mexico, India, and Africa, ensuring every batch meets the highest quality standards.

For example, their signature Chipotle seasoning is made from red Jalapeños smoked in Cape Town, adding layers of smoky depth to the natural heat. According to Barnard, “Chipotle is my personal favourite because it has an underlying fruity sweetness with savoury and smoky notes that delivers medium heat. It’s incredibly versatile.”

The company’s approach to chilli sourcing also includes Indian Ghost Chillies from Nagaland, which are known for their fiery kick and intense flavour. Cape Herb & Spice’s dedication to quality ensures that each of their seasonings delivers an authentic, unforgettable taste experience.

“Many people think chillies are just about heat, but they bring so much more to the table,” says Barnard.

“Mild chillies like Ancho are sweet and tart, while hotter varieties like Habanero are fruity and nutty – it has a distinctive flavour which you taste before it throws you against the wall. Understanding the balance between heat and flavour allows us to truly appreciate the depth and diversity that chillies offer in cooking.”

As consumer tastes evolve, Cape Herb & Spice stays at the forefront of the spice industry, consistently delivering bold, natural flavours.

All their products are non-GMO, non-irradiated, and free from artificial colours, flavours, and MSG, making them accessible to a broad consumer base. Their seasonings are also Kosher, Halaal certified, and suitable for vegans, ensuring that spice lovers of all kinds can enjoy their products.
