Deputy Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize dies

Condolences are pouring in after news broke that the deputy minister in the presidency for women, youth and persons with disabilities, Professor Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize, has died.

The cause of Mkhize‘s death has not yet been confirmed. She passed away at the age of 69.

Mkhize also served as chairperson of the peace commission of South African Women in Dialogue from 2004, was treasurer general of the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) and a member of the National Executive Committee for the party.

She was also a founding member and trustee of the Children and Violence Trust, and has been a trustee of the Malibongwe Business Trust since 2005.

South African political heavyweights such as Thuli Madonsela have expressed their sympathy following Mkhize’s death.
