‘Help! I’ve got the land, but can’t find a wife’

Liewe Lulu is Food For Mzansi’s no-holds-barred agri agony aunty. While she receives many letters from across South Africa, preference is given to those who are working in the agricultural sector. Yes, farmers have issues too, and Liewe Lulu’s got the tissues

Mr Lonely Heart from Mahikeng in North West writes…

I think the fact that I farm is intimidating the women that I meet. I started farming when I was 24 and it took a lot of cutting back financially to finally feel like I am accomplishing something. My grandparents left me the land, and I worked a demanding job to pay my way through. I am 29 and farm full-time with vegetables, a few chickens and goats.

The women I date are in their twenties. I have been rejected a lot and women tend to ghost me after three dates. One girl actually said that farmers were too emotionally unavailable.

I am looking for a wife.

I have never taken a woman to my farm. Should I stop telling them what I do for a living?

Mr Lonely Heart, my stud

Nana, finding your true love is not about the right shoes or having a flat stomach or in your case, spending hours and hours in the hot sun and putting food on Mzansi’s tables. It is about being ready.

Did you ever stop and think that these women rejecting you might just not be the right matches for you?

It’s not an external thing, babes. Chances are if you are having trouble dating, you and you alone have something to do with it.

If you are having some trouble finding love, then the dating is not your main problem. Dating could merely be a symptom of something bigger and deeper.

Also it is their loss if they don’t want to date a farmer. The big lesson in your misfortune is when you meet a woman who will match your spirit, tenacity, chutzpah and soul, they will love you for who you are.

Let’s try brand alignment in 2022, by not saying don’t date a farmer but perhaps look beyond physical attributes and nyash?

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
