“Traditionally, farmers planned around relatively predictable seasons and rainfall patterns,” Myburgh explains. “But today we often receive the same amount of rainfall, but it arrives in fewer amounts, and sometimes these events are very intense when they come, too. Then they’re also followed by some very extended dry periods.”
This erratic climate footprint means that agricultural survival hinges on a shift in perspective. Total seasonal rainfall figures no longer tell the full story. Instead, operational survival depends on how effectively every drop is handled on the ground.
“This means that we no longer focus only on total rainfall. But we have to move our focus to capturing, storing, and effectively using these millimetres that have fallen over the season. Crop production now requires greater emphasis on resilience, flexibility, and risk management, rather than maximising your yield only.”

“I think for me, if I were in a farmer’s shoes, I would focus on understanding the variability within my own fields and managing them accordingly. Whether it’s by soil testing or yield analysis methods, or even just doing hybrid placement trials or improving your soil health,” Myburgh advises.
Ultimately, these practices prove that risk mitigation and operational efficiency work hand in hand. By focusing on variables under their direct control, producers can lower their risk profile, optimise resource use, and protect their margins simultaneously.
“Farmers who understand and manage variability best will be the most resilient in the increasingly unpredictable climate that we are seeing and experiencing in our current situation,” Myburgh notes.
“So, I think resilience, for me, starts with informed decision-making. That’s where the key component is.”
