Pasture management is vital for sustainable agriculture and livestock production. In this episode, we unpack the crucial aspects of pasture management, selecting the most suitable grass species, various factors to consider such as climate, soil type, and the type of livestock being raised, and how they influence the choice of grass.
Ntokoza Msiza, a pasture scientist, shares characteristics and the nutritional value of different grass species, and their resilience to grazing, providing valuable insights to help you optimise your pasture management practices.
Choosing the right grass species is like picking the perfect team for your farm. Msiza explains how factors like climate, soil type, and even the animals you raise all influence this crucial decision.
Importance of livestock’s grazing habits
“Basically, when we look at pasture management systems, we know that they are very vulnerable to both climate change and climate variability. The rainfall and the temperature are key determinants of pasture productivity, which is the growth of the grasses,” she explains.
Msiza highlights the difference between grazers and browsers, emphasising how understanding your animals’ grazing habits is vital when choosing the right grass mix. A happy cow in a pasture full of delicious, nutritious grasses translates to better livestock health and productivity.
“At the end of the day, it’s knowing when to introduce your cattle to the field when the grasses are at a vegetative stage,” she says.
She adds that the fight against invasive species is a multi-pronged attack. Msiza discusses strategies like mowing invasive trees, using targeted herbicides, and even introducing natural predators to control their spread. Msiza also explores how promoting the growth of native grasses and planting improved pasture varieties is crucial for sustainable grazing.
In this episode, Msiza also discusses:
- Nutritional needs and grazing habits;
- Breeding techniques and research; and
- Invasive species management.
