Black Cat, a beloved Mzansi peanut butter brand, has a new home thanks to a R300 million investment by Tiger Brands. The new manufacturing facility is located in Chamdor, Krugersdorp, on Johannesburg’s West Rand.
The plant’s official opening was celebrated by Tiger Brands chief executive Tjaart Kruger, and Nomalungelo Gina, deputy minister trade, industry and competition. This investment signifies the significant growth potential Tiger Brands sees in the peanut butter category.
“Consumers are seeking affordable and healthy food options, and peanut butter is a staple in the South African diet,” said Kruger. “This new facility will allow us to be more flexible, efficient, and cost-effective, all while meeting the needs of our customers.”
Beloved brand in SA
Peanut butter holds a significant share of the South African spreads market, accounting for R1.7 billion or 50% of the total market (excluding margarine). Black Cat is a major player, with 5 million kilograms sold annually in formal retail stores.
The new facility boasts state-of-the-art equipment to improve reliability and efficiency. Upgraded packaging lines will allow for quicker innovation and the introduction of new products that meet consumer demands for affordability and value.
Black Cat is a household name in South Africa, recognised for its high quality. Brand research indicates that nearly 70% of South African homes, or 10 million out of 15 million peanut butter-buying households, have Black Cat.
“This investment by Tiger Brands will further strengthen a proudly South African brand,” said Dumo Mfini, managing director of culinary at Tiger Brands. “We are well-positioned to meet consumer needs for affordability and nutrition with Black Cat’s superior quality.”
Black Cat’s achievements include being voted the coolest peanut butter brand by South African youth in the 2023 Sunday Times GenNext Awards and receiving Iconic Brand status and Overall Category Winner in a 2023/2024 Ask Afrika survey.
