For pigs to reach their genetic potential, the right environment and management inputs are required. Meadow Feeds technical advisor, Enrike Maree, joins this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track to give insight into operating a piggery enterprise.
Maree says, “As long as farmers maintain the management, feeding practices, and environmental conditions on their farm, I am sure they can realise the potential of their pigs.”
She adds that among other things, farm management, record-keeping, checking nutrition and monitoring the pig’s health are key to running a successful piggery business.
“When it comes to [where the pig is housed, it’s important for the environment to be comfortable to pigs. Pigs who feel safe and are stress free, generally do well.”

Factors to consider
Maree also explains that when a farmer is planning their piggery layout, they should take into consideration the pigs’ comfort. There should be sufficient space for the pigs to eat and to drink.
“The health factor is also a very important one and regardless of farm size, I’m stressing this because a lot of times the smaller farmers think that it’s not necessary.”
Bacterial growth, for instance, can be reduced by cleaning the pens out regularly through a wet or dry clean, he advises.
To ensure pigs grow according to their genetic capability and remain healthy, Maree adds that avoiding any form of cold or heat stress is important.
