Pies are the food of champions. It’s filling and full of buttery goodness and now you can learn how to make the most hearty home-cooked pies yourself. Food entrepreneur Pumla Gobelo from Mbuks Catering Services in Butterworth shares her recipe for a flaky and meaty mince pie.
It takes less than an hour to make, making for a very convenient summer meal. And just a side note: You are definitely a winner in our books if you can make your own pastry – even if you take shortcuts and roll out ready-made sheets. The choice is yours.
So take it away and make Gobelo’s convenient saucy mince pies this weekend.

INGREDIENTS
Thawed sheet of puff pastry
½ red pepper, finely chopped
½ green pepper, finely chopped
½ yellow pepper, finely chopped
½ onion, finely chopped
600g mince
1 pinch of paprika
4 parsley leaves
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 tbsp oil
1 cube beef stock
250ml hot water
2 eggs
Sriracha cheese sauce from Imana
METHOD
- Heat your stove to a medium setting.
- Pour a spoon of oil into a frying pan/pot and place on the stove.
- Once the oil is hot, add the peppers and onion.
- Combine the mince, paprika, parsley, salt and black pepper in a mixing bowl. Add to the onions and peppers in the pan.
- Pour hot water into a jug and add the beef stock; stir until dissolved. Add to the mince mix.
- Now add the cheese sauce and mix until blended.
- Spread the puff pastry out and arrange your mince in the centre.
- Fold it till the mince is covered and use a fork to seal the edges.
- Brush the tops of your pie with the lightly beaten eggs.
- Preheat your oven at 180°C and bake for 20 minutes.
- Serve and enjoy.
