In a candid conversation, Makofane shared her metamorphosis from a seasoned corporate professional to an enterprising farmer in Polokwane, Limpopo. It was a bold leap triggered by the adversity of losing her job, a pivotal moment that ignited her dormant entrepreneurial flair.
“There’s more out there,” she affirmed, recognising the need to provide for her two children. This realisation marked the genesis of her agricultural expedition in 2021.
Breaking new ground
Venturing into farming was an intuitive choice, one driven by practicality and passion. Her alliance with Mopani Rural Hub paved the way, steering her into cultivating a remarkable journey. From planting piquant chilli on six hectares with peppadew to embracing poultry farming, Makofane’s trajectory is an ode to adaptability and tenacity.
Undoubtedly, her odyssey into agriculture wasn’t without challenges. Transitioning from the structured corporate world to the unpredictable terrain of farming required resilience and fortitude.
She candidly admitted to the “school fees” she paid through losses and steep learning curves. Yet, surrendering wasn’t an option. Her unwavering determination, fuelled by the responsibility of providing for her children, fortified her resolve.
Makofane’s motivation is layered with purpose. Beyond securing a livelihood, she aspires to build a legacy – a testament to her dedication to redefining farming as a business.
