Step into the remarkable story of Moshibudi Makgoba, a #SoilSista transforming challenges into opportunities and infusing barren lands with growth, empowerment, and a vision for a brighter agricultural future in Mankweng, Limpopo.

Meet Moshibudi Makgoba, who can now also add #SoilSista to her list of achievements. Her journey from a fresh-faced graduate to a gutsy entrepreneur in farming isn’t your typical success story – it’s a tale of resilience, hard knocks, and a whole lot of heart.

Makgoba’s gig isn’t all glossy victories; it’s about rolling up sleeves and getting hands dirty. She recently hitched her wagon to the 2023 Corteva Agriscience Women Agripreneur Programme with the GIBS Entrepreneurship Academy, a platform she credits for sharpening her chops and turbocharging her vision.

Rolling with the punches

Her story kicks off not in some lofty landscape but in the realness of life. Growing up, she heard stories of her grandmother whose spirit shaped her outlook. Grandma’s grit fuelled Makgoba’s belief that farming isn’t just about crops; it’s about dreams seeded in the soil.

But hold your applause; Makgoba’s path wasn’t a bed of roses. She faced more than her fair share of flops – losing a truckload of cabbages here, hitting walls in the market there. Yet, she didn’t fold; she learned, adapted, and kept going.

Her journey isn’t just about planting seeds; it’s about sowing ideas. “Inguma,” her brainchild soil booster, is proof. It wasn’t a cakewalk getting it out there. She hustled and poured heart and sweat equity into making it a reality, not just for the land but for her farming tribe.

Cultivating hope and reaping success

The #SoilSistas programme wasn’t just another checkbox; it was a game changer. It schooled her in street-smart stuff – handling cash, reading markets, and playing nice with people, all things she says gave her biz muscle a serious pump.

Makgoba isn’t just about her wins; she’s got her eyes on community game-changers. She dreams big, seeing barren lands as untapped goldmines and wants to spark a revolution, making farms not just food havens but also job hotspots.

Her advice? It’s not the rehearsed guru stuff; it’s real talk.

Makgoba says, “Hey, dream big, but don’t get lost in the clouds. Stay grounded, learn the ropes, and yeah, dare to shake things up.”

Makgoba, the #SoilSista, is no superhero. She’s a hard-working farmer with a vision. Her journey is the kind you’ll find in the fields, where success isn’t about a smooth ride but about navigating the bumps, learning, and growing. In her story, we see not just a farmer but a community champion, cultivating more than crops. She’s growing hope.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
