Two farmworkers died in a road accident between Grabouw and Villiersdorp on Tuesday morning (7 September). Thoko Didiza, national minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development, expressed her sadness at this news.
It is alleged that a car overtook another and crashed into the truck with a closed trailer, which carried 57 workers. Two of the workers died in the accident and four were seriously injured, Didiza said in a statement.
“Farmworkers play a critical role in the sector, economy and in their families. They were able to put food on the table.”
The workers are believed to have been employees of Chiltern Farms, located in the Vygeboom Valley of the Western Cape.
Daylin Mitchell, the province’s MEC for transport, also extended his condolences to the families of those who died in the crash.
“Officials from the provincial department of agriculture are currently providing support to the injured and the bereaved,” the minister added.
